This is the programmed track I used to prepare the full performance. It follows the written tempos, time-signature changes, instrument-transition periods, simple and compound meter relationships, and the etude's complete pacing.
Repeatedly hearing the tuplets at the correct spacing lets students match the click, repeat the motion, and develop a physical sense of the speed while playing.
The middle school etude asks students to manage changing subdivisions and meters, instrument transitions, and a timpani tuning change during rests. These resources pair a complete reference with a guided way to practice those transitions accurately.

This programmed track follows the written tempos, time-signature and subdivision changes, pulse relationships between simple and compound meters, instrument transitions, and full pacing of the middle school etude. It also guides the timpani tuning change during the written rests.
Drone pitches provide target notes during the rest. They give students an aural reference and show how much time remains before the next entrance. Practice hearing the pitch, moving the pedal, confirming the result, and staying oriented in the music together.
These tuning drones are practice aids added by Spencer Perilloux. They are not part of the official MSBOA audition and will not be present during the audition.
All-State auditions should be challenging, but students still need a clear path into the material. Percussion students have different levels of access to private instruction, percussion-specific classes, working instruments, and specialist coaching.
A motivated student should be able to hear a reference, understand the timing demands, and practice accurately. These videos aim to reduce unnecessary guesswork so more practice time can go toward sound, technique, musicianship, reading, and consistency.
I offer private percussion coaching for All-State, honor band, ensemble placement, and college auditions. Online coaching may fit some preparation goals; in-person instruction is available by arrangement in Michigan.
